This is a sixteen-day journey into the most iconic region of the Himalayas. You will arrive at the Everest Base Camp on your ninth day in Nepal. During the long trip you will enjoy the traditional culture and hospitality of the local Sherpa people, and see the country change as you rise higher into the mountains, from the forested slopes, fields and terraces of Lukla to the steep, rocky valleys approaching the snowline and the enveloping icy peaks of the high elevations on the lower slopes of Everest itself.
Spending time at such heights, even the approaches to Everest Base Camp, requires some acclimatization. After flying into Lukla from Kathmandu and then completing the two-day trek up to Phakding and Namche Bazar in the Lower Everest region (3535m), you will spend a day adjusting to the conditions with a walk in the valley and a leisurely visit to the local Sherpa museum. After a day’s trek to Dingboche, you will enjoy another acclimatization day with a trip to the Chhukung valley where there are fine views of the world’s fifth highest mountain peak, Makalu (8463m). With snow capped peaks all around, you will be eager to trek higher up to the Everest Base Camp.
The high altitude Everest region has fewer visitors than Annapurna, but trekkers are well provide for with guest houses and lodges giving a welcome warm bed for the night, including breakfast and often lunch and dinner as well. Along the way you will visit the lavishly rebuilt monastery at Tengboche. In its idyllic setting backed by high snow-capped peaks and surrounded by pine trees and alpine meadows, it presents to the world a modest red-roofed exterior, while the interior is a magnificent, brightly colored and ornamented tribute to Buddha.
On the first day of the return trip from the Everest Base Camp you will stay overnight at Ghorakshep and then hike up the slopes of Kalapathar (5545m) for a fine view of Everest and the icy wastes of the surrounding peaks. Then it’s a three-day trek back to Lukla via Pheriche and Namche Bazar before flying back to Kathmandu.
